A step-by-step text guide to measuring your room for your new carpet or vinyl flooring - including measuring for stairs.

Standard Room Measurement Guide

1) Draw a simple diagram of the room you are looking to decorate. You should draw each room seperately, allowing you to accurately measure the amount of flooring you will need to order.

2) Measure your rooms. You should measure from the longest points of your walls, measuring the length and width, ensuring that you don't get any gaps against the walls. House blueprints can give you a rough estimate of the room size, but in practice it is best to physically measure the room for any discrepancies between the house plans and the construction. Each measurement should be rounded up to the nearest 10cm.

3) Double check your measurements. It is good practice to double check your measurements just incase you have found a larger part of a room. Once you have your accurate readings, write them down on your room diagram.

4) Additionally to these measurements, don't forget to factor in doorways and other alcoves where extra flooring may be required.

Stairs Measurement Guide

1) Measuring the Top Landing. Draw a simple diagram. Measure your Top Landing. You should measure from the longest points of your walls, measuring the length and width, ensuring that you don't get any gaps against the walls. Make sure you measure over the nose, until your first step. (The carpet joining in the "V" where the Top Landing and the first step meets)

2) Measuring a stair. You should measure the width of your stairs and count how many stairs you have.

3) In the case your stairs has a turn steps (the top looks like a kite), measure the widest point.

4) In the case your stairs has a Middle landing, measure the widest point than measure over the nose right until the "V".

5) In the case your stairs has a Bullnose step (usually the bottom step), measure from the wall following the bend until the newel post. Than measure the tread and the riser together.

6) Finally if you want to carpeted the Hallway, draw a simple diagram. Measure your Hallway. You should measure from the longest points of your walls, measuring the length and width, ensuring that you don't get any gaps against the walls.

Notes

1) Retailers tend to stock carpet in 4m and rarely 5m widths and vinyl in widths of 2m, 3m and 4m.

2) You should expect wastage, especially when your room is less than 4m wide!

3) If your room is wider than 4m, then we will have to use seams and joins to piece the carpet together if there isn't any 5m in stock.
